    1. Lending Crowdfunding
      1. Definition. Crowdfunding in the form of loans made to individuals or companies in exchange for a promise that loans will be repaid with interest.   These sites facilitate crowdfunded loans to individuals for purposes like home improvement and debt refinancing. Companies also use lending crowdfunding to acquire capital from the crowd.  As the individual or company pays back the debt accrued, subsequent rounds generally come at lower interest rates.  Over time those seeking funding can acquire capital at rates much lower than traditional credit cards or other types of high-interest debt. The issue of default is dealt with differently according to the policies of the individual crowd fund site. This type of crowdfunding is good for individuals or companies who need to raise capital, often over the course of multiple rounds or stages, but do not want to give up equity.

  1. Equity Crowdfunding
    1. Definition: Crowdfunding where the exchange is company equity, or ownership, and not goods or services. Due to the current restrictions in place, this type of funding is not available to individuals unless they are accredited investors. The JOBS act seeks to remove these restrictions, but this will not take effect until the SEC issues final guidelines. The SEC has issued a Draft Guidance (included in my research folder) but this will not be approved until fall of 2015 at the earliest.
